HTC has announced a partnership with Cloud Storage company Dropbox, in a move which will bring free cloud storage to new HTC smartphone owners.
Microsoft already offers its own version of cloud storage, Skydrive, for Windows Phone users, and Apple are launching iCloud for iPhone users next month, and so this deal ensures HTC are rivalling their main competitors.
Speaking to Pocket-Lint earlier today, HTC confirmed that a deal had been struck with Dropbox which will bring 5GB of cloud storage space to new owners of Android HTC smartphones. Dropbox already offers 2GB of free storage space to new customers, but if you’ve purchased a new HTC phone such as the HTC Rhyme, you’ll be gifted an extra 3GB of storage space.
By using a Dropbox app on your phone, you will be able to instantly upload photos, music and videos to your 5GB of storage space – your own personal ‘data locker’ stored on the internet, if you like. This data locker can then be accessed on a laptop or computer by logging into the Dropbox website, or through your phone or a tablet device. Storing photographs and videos online means more room on your phone’s internal memory or memory card.
The offer will be available to anyone who purchases an Android HTC smartphone that runs their Sense 3.5 user interface. So far this includes the Rhyme and the Sensation XE, though there are plenty more to follow including the HTC Bass.
The deal is only available on Android phones from HTC, as Microsoft already offers a whopping 25GB of cloud storage space for Windows Phone smartphones with their own service, Skydrive.
