With The Avengers movie casting its Hulk-sized shadow on the horizon (retitled “Avengers Assemble” in the UK) we should of course expect the inevitable wave of high-tech toys and cash-in opportunities which will surround one of the blockbuster events of 2012. But it’s not only the collective force of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk in the motion picture universe who’ll be treading into battle in a new dimension this year. Publisher Marvel is also planning to release future issues of the longstanding The Avengers comic book series as special Augmented Reality editions.
The introduction of super-cool AR through the Aurasama app will allow “true believers” the chance to step into the world first created by legendary writer Stan “The Man” Lee as The Avengers embark on one of their biggest storyline angles of all time – a war against the X-Men! Avengers vs. X-Men #1 hits the shelves in April and with it Apple iOS and Android-based smartphone and tablet owning readers will benefit from a range of features accessible through the comic’s pages and the AR reading software – thus opening a whole new universe of exclusive content such as interviews with the comics’ creators, concept art and the panels on the page will be brought to life in 3D imagery.
Marvel’s Editor in Chief Axel Alonso says “Current tablets and smartphones, along with comiXology’s Guided View technology, allow us to develop new, full length stories for a different medium that are very much truly comics — but experienced by readers in a way no other major company has ever executed”.
