Nokia replaced lettered handset titles with simplified numbering scheme

Nokia are set to drop wordy titles from their mobiles, along with those lettered prefixes that always get us wondering “What does that stand for?” The Finnish communications co. will now instead be going with a simple numbering scheme for future mobile handsets. It’s pretty easy to follow..

Expect no more “N”, “X” or “C” phones. Now each Nokia model will be given a number. The greater the number, the better the spec – and yes, you guessed it – the higher the price. This pattern has been introduced with one of Nokia’s latest as they have ditched the former “Fate” and rebranded it as the “500” (a “budget” model which the Gadget Helpline covered in a recent article) – with every successor model set to following. So if and when the rumoured 790 drops, we now know it won’t be cheap but will be a top mobile.

However, we don’t know if this will affect Nokia models which are part of the Windows Phone 7 partnership or only native Symbian OS handsets. We’ll find out soon enough..
