Apple TV may need to up its game or face some stiff competition in 2012. Roku, the currently US-only media streaming service and set top box, is coming to the UK, bringin a raft of subscription-free on-demand content with it.
The box retails for $50-$100 in the States (depending on extras), and is free from there on out, providing on-demand video from a host of big US network TV channels as well as movies via Netflix and Hulu.
Those two companies are US-only at the moment, but Roku’s launch in the UK is bound to include deals with LoveFilm and the usual suspects on the British on-demand scene. If it all comes together, Apple TV’s limited offering will look pretty poor in comparison, but we’re all for a bit of healthy competition.
