Spielberg to helm Halo game-to-movie adaptation?

Halo.. is it me you’re looking for?

It seems that’s a question Chairman and Co-Founder of Dreamworks Films and the genius behind sci-fi classic movies ET and Jurassic Park, Stephen Spielberg asks regularly. We’ve heard many-a-rumour over the past few years about a Halo movie and that the director, producer and visual artist is desperate to get onboard the video-game-to-movie adaptation of the popular Xbox title – but from storylines based on the series of spin-off novels.

The latest update to this particular story comes from a French source in the form of a press release which revealed details of a new addition to the books series entitled Halo: Crytum – not only was the novel detailed, but the press release (via translation) goes on to announce that Spielberg is now signed up to the movie project with his company Dreamworks.

The press release translates to say “A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.”

Halo was first released by Microsoft and developer Bungie as an Xbox exclusive, almost a decade ago in November 2001 and the series will get a reboot with Halo 4 on the way. What better time to announce a movie than the tenth anniversary year? Spielberg has most recently acted as producer on television shows such as Falling Skies and Terra Nova, as well as the J.J Abrahms film Super 8. The last movie released that Spielberg himself directed was 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Traditionally video-game-to-movie crossovers are unintentionally terrible, but if this French press leak becomes reality we could see one of the best movie directors of our lifetime, on an adaptation of one of the greatest game franchise of gaming history. It’s sure to be Epic!
