Spotify has certainly been busy this year with various updates being rolled out to the popular music streaming site.
And now, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has just announced that they have beefed up their radio feature which has been around for a while. It was announced that the radio feature has been re-built from scratch. It’s now technically an app that has been developed by the Spotify New York, which operates on the recently announced app platform. When introducing the new radio app, Daniel Ek said that “It’s kind of like Pandora with unlimited skipping and unlimited stations.”
If you’re not familiar with Pandora (and unless you live in the US, you probably won’t be), it’s a service that will allow you to select your favourite artist or song, it will then suggest and play additional songs by various artists that it thinks you’ll like. You can then rate the chosen songs as to whether you like them or not – this will then be taken into account when picking you future songs.
No doubt Spotify will see Pandora as a direct competitor in the US, and hence it has offered a similar product but with additional bells and wistles – for example, unlimited stations; currently Pandora limits users to 100 stations.
During the announcement, Ek said “What we’ve discovered is that we’re a lean back experience and a lean forward. Spotify historically hasn’t been very good at curating music … [And Radio] is a big use case that a lot of people are asking us for.”
