The creators of the popular MMORPG Star Trek Online have paid tribute to the actor Leonard Nimoy, who died recently, by erecting statues of his famous character Mister Spock in some of the game’s key locations.
During their missions players of the STO game on Windows PC and Mac will be able to visit memorial sites on Vulcan and New Romulus where the statues will stand tall and feature famous Spock lines including “Live Long and Prosper” and “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” – the line spoken before he sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise crew in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Visitors entering Earth in the Star Trek Online game will also find black flags draped at the spaceport over a few days as a sign of respect to Nimoy/Spock.Nimoy was beloved by legions of sci-fi fans for his portrayal of the logic spouting Spock – the half-Vulcan half-Human character he embraced for almost 50 years who first appeared in the 1966 Star Trek (‘The Original Series’) and last cameoed in the second film in J.J Abrams’ reimagining of the series, Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013.
He sadly passed away on February 27th 2015 at age 83 after being hospitalised as the result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Rumour suggested Nimoy was set to reunite on screen with his generation’s Captain Kirk, William Shatner who would make an appearance in Star Trek 3 as a celebration of half a century of the sci-fi odyssey. Fans across the Earth, and even NASA astronauts on the ISS floating above it, have been throwing up the “LLAP” hand gesture in tribute to the legendary actor and pop culture icon and we expect J.J Abrams and his crew will find some fitting way to mark Nimoy’s legacy in the upcoming movie, just as Cryptic Studios have done with the Star Trek Online game.
