After rumours were circulating surrounding Twitter’s supposed acquisition of the popular Desktop and Mobile client Tweetdeck, both companies have finally officially announced the deal.
Twitter has spent a whopping $40 million to acquire the popular third party app. There have been rumours going around for a couple of weeks that a deal was in the pipeline; back in early May, Mike Arrington reported that the deal was as good as done.
The companies however have only just released the figures involved in the deal, showing that Twitter has pulled out the stops to get the deal pushed through.
It has been a little bit of a roller coaster for TweetDeck, as back in February it was reported they were due to be taken over by Bill Gross’ UberMedia for a price ranging between $25 and $30 million, but Twitter were quick to throw in a counter offer ultimately securing the deal.
Twitter’s reason for the purchase was simple: it could not allow Bill Gross’ UberMedia to take that chunk of Twitters users, it would have given them a lot of leverage when it came to Twitter, and that was something they could not allow to happen.
