The LOLs are on Vodafone today – as it seems a recently reported theft of New Zealand’s shipment of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone/consoles was a bluff by Vodafone and Verizon to push the much-anticipated gadget.
Vodafone made a statement through its official Twitter stating a “Major security breach” and claimed “Our fraud team are investigating the stolen Xperia Play phones and have released footage of the break-in. Can you help?”
Verizon Wireless also played along and pleaded for customer’s help in a “manhunt” offering six of the Xperia Play handsets and $5000 worth of gaming credits as rewards.
Eagle-eyed tech-heads caught onto the ruse and busted when slip-ups in the “CCTV” footage were noted, such as no time stamps and inconsistancies in the video, which went viral in no time. Busted!
Regarded as the “Playstation phone”, the Xperia Play launched on the Vodafone network in the UK with minimal difficulties and zero shenanigans last month and a US release is coming on May 26th – but we don’t expect any further criminal activity or hoaxes. It looks like the game is up!
