Sony Online Entertainment Goes Private

Former Sony property Sony Online Entertainment, a game studio responsible for a multitude of earlier game titles, has been sold off by the company and has now re-emerged as a private studio named Daybreak Game Company, according to a press release from the company through Reddit.

The studio was sold off by Sony after seeing hard times and layoffs in the previous years. Former titles developed by the former SOE include Everquest and Planetside, as well as less popular MMO titles such as Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online, and The Matrix Online.

Whilst these MMOs failed to make it big on the scale of other competing titles, the company is looking forward to future game development across multiple platforms. the newly named Daybreak are expected to release titles on the Xbox One as well as Playstation consoles, with the lack of need for Sony exclusivity meaning they can now branch out

EverQuest fans will be pleased to hear that a new installment in the series is on the way.

Company president John Smedley was happy with the new ability for the company to take advantage of the multi platform world we live in, tweeting that he couldn’t wait to make games for the Xbox One. The Reddit post also highlighted the company’s desire to make games which everyone can play, regardless of console brand  ownership.

The company’s recently released title on Steam access, a zombie survival sim called H1Z1, will continue to be developed and supported, and additionally fans of Everquest, arguably the studio’s most popular title, will be happy to learn that Daybreak will continue to develop Everquest Next, the next installment in the franchise.

“We expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.”

All in all it’s a good deal for gamers – another experienced studio now has the ability to make games across the console platforms and content will be available to more consumers. Investment group Columbus Nova, who acquired the company, is set to support the studio in their further efforts, so expect to see some new titles from the Daybreak Game Company in the near future.
