An early version of Google Wallet may be launched today in the United States if a leaked memo is anything to go by. This would bring Google’s tap to pay service in public use for the first time since it was first announced back in May.
The memo obtained by a fellow blog site, suggests that the service will have a very limited trial roll out on September 19th on Google’s own Sprint Nexus S smartphone for owners with a compatible Citi Mastercard ‘PayPass’ account with Google payment card. The scheme will bring bank account accessibility to mobile phones, meaning users can pay for goods by scanning their mobile and also retain loyalty rewards and added bonuses.
If Google Wallet burns a hole in pockets from today it’ll be a heralding to the service presumably reaching the United Kingdom – which Mastercard is already involved in and networks such as O2 and Orange are eager to translate across.
Bear in mind that today is also the first day of the NFC World Congress in Nice, France – which showcases the Near Field Communications tech used in the mobile payment system, which effectively confirms the leaked memo – or is an incredible co-incidence.
