After appearing far too many times unofficially, the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook has finally been made official by RIM.
Sticking with the same 7-inch form factor as the Wi-Fi only model, the new device will launch in Canada on August 9th with 4G LTE connectivity for blazing-fast mobile internet. Unfortunately as we’re not yet using 4G here in the UK, this device will be Canada and US only for the time being.
After explaining he has deliberated licensing the forthcoming BlackBerry 10 software to other phone manufacturers, CEO Thorsten Heins announced that the new 4G variant will hit the company’s home country of Canada next week.
Unfortunately for BlackBerry fans there’s still no sign of the BlackBerry 10 OS, and the new model will land running the latest PlayBook 2.0.1 software, which is based on QNX technologies. Internal storage will be 32GB as standard, after RIM announced it would be ditching the smaller 16GB model.
We’ve seen a 3G version of the PlayBook leak before, which would bring mobile internet capabilities to our shores, but unfortunately this device still remains unofficial.
The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook will launch in 4G-compatible nations later in the year, including Germany, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
