BlackBerry 7 OS keyboard set for PlayBook-style refresh

If you’re used to the particular sensibilities of one touchscreen keyboard, it can take a little while to get used to the button placements and sizes of another. It’s brave, then, that RIM has decided to update its mobile virtual keyboard for its next BlackBerry operating system, OS 7.

Set to land on the BlackBerry 9810, the updated virtual keypad features squarer, cleaner lines and edges designed to adhere more to the design aesthetics of the one found on the PlayBook tablet. Noticeable differences at this stage appear to be that the enter keys on the left and right side have swapped position with the numbers and enter keys respectively, and there’s now also a button for minimising the keyboard, a la Android.

BlackBerry’s success was traditionally in its ability to let users fire off long emails easily via its full QWERTY physical keyboard. RIM is still finding its feet in the touchscreen market, so it’ll just have to hope that this next virtual keyboard does the trick. Can you get on board with it?
