CES 2013: Sony announces “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray titles for Ultra HD TVs

With the CES 2013 show rolling on over in Las Vegas Sony has announced a series of “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray titles that will be playable on the new wave of 4K Ultra HD televisions that have been announced at the show.

Sony will be releasing some of its new and classic titles in 4K to the public to show off the new 4K capabilities of its latest, and very pricey, televisions.

Titles such as The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, The Karate Kid,  Battle: Los Angeles and The Other Guys will hit the shelves first, with Sony promising more titles on the way over the coming months.

The 4K technology will allow users with compatible TVs to play movies in a whopping 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, which is double the current  1,920 x 1,080 resolution that a standard Blu-ray will offer on a Full HD TV.

The “Mastered in 4K” titles will all be sourced from the pristine 4K masters that they were filmed in and presented at a high-bitrate 1080p resolution, with expanded color showcasing more of the wide range of rich color contained in the original source.

Sony’s says that standard Blu-ray discs will be upscaled to 4K quality if used on their new Ultra HD TVs so that viewers will experience a near-4K picture without the need for buying specific 4K content.

“The electronics industry’s ground breaking launch of 4K Ultra HD TV has given us reason to even further elevate our Blu-ray offering,” said David Bishop, President, SPHE. “This spring, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is excited to deliver a complementing line-up of ‘Mastered in 4K’ Blu-ray titles, offering consumers the best possible picture and sound quality to be experienced on the latest HDTVs.”

Sony will be launching the “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray titles in Spring 2013 as well as its 4K video distribution service in the summer of 2013 in the US.
