HTC has finally begun its Android 2.3 roll out onto its Desire handset, as promised, then unaffirmed, then promised again..
It’s been a “will they, won’t they?” type of affair with the HTC Desire’s Android update. Initially the mobile gadget came along in May 2010 packing 2.2 version Froyo and we had been told a couple months back it would get the nod for 2.3. HTC claiming that the Desire would get its taste of Gingerbread, despite restrictions the somewhat dated handset would mean for any update. This statement was later withdrawn by HTC who said that, no –the Desire would not get the platform upgrade because this would need all handsets to be reset to factory settings.
Today, HTC changes its mind again, and distribution of Gingerbread will begin. However, a few points to note – This update is “for development only and not for general public use” say the Taiwanese manufacturer. Adding “Upgrades to non-authorized phones may result in loss of functionality”,
Another thing is that by installing the Android 2.3 update and pushing the Desire’s capabilities, some applications will be rendered unusable. These include some of HTC’s native apps, as well as Facebook for Android – Although these can be reinstalled via the Android Market.
HTC Desire’s successor, the Desire Z, got its update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in mid-July.
