As all iPhone users will be aware, currently the only way to ensure that your iPhone is up-to-date is to connect it to your PC or Mac, and update with iTunes. However, the latest reports from the guys over at 9 To 5 Mac suggest that things are about to change.
The 9 To 5 Mac crew are quoting from multiple sources that Apple intend to launch a new OTA update service later on this year, which will be part of the latest iOS 5 update.
Apple has apparently been talking with Verizon about a wireless update method since the beginning of the year. Although as it stands at the moment, one problem I can see that Apple will have to overcome is the fact that currently, most of the updates are around 600Mb in size – which is simply too big to be sent OTA. Therefore we might possibly start to see more frequent updates from Apple in smaller manageable chunks which can be easily sent Over-The-Air.
One other problem is that currently when users choose to update their iPhone, iTunes will automatically make a back-up should anything go wrong, obviously by OTA this won’t be able to happen – unless, Apple have plans to back-up your iPhone to a cloud-based backup system?
Being an iOS update, iPad users as well as iPod Touch users should also expect to see this similar update method used as well. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple’s exact plans are.
