Samsung has finally started to release the Android 4.0 Ice Cream sandwich software update for its range of Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet devices. The Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 will all be receiving the update this week.
The first tablet to get the ICS update will be the biggest and Samsung’s slightly controversial (as far as Apple is concerned) Galaxy Tab 10.1, which should be arriving from now onwards in batch releases, followed by the smaller 7.7 and 8.9 models, which are expected to get the update in the coming weeks.
The download should be coming OTA (over the air) so ensure you keep your device well connected in the coming days, or alternatively you can update using the Samsung Kies PC suite via your computer where you can manually update.
Currently the update is only available for UK tablets, with our cousins in the US having to wait a little bit longer for the update to come to their devices.
The updated Android operating system is also optimised for tablets, replacing the short-lived Honeycomb which has done its duty as a stepping stone to get the popular platform onto tablet devices.
The update will include many new features such as upgrades to the battery performance, speed improvements, drag and drop folder management, the ability to shut down background-running applications, as well as access to software tools from the lock screen and built-in photo editing.
Updaters can also look forward to improvements in stability and camera performance as well as smoother screen rotation when the Android ICS update starts to arrive.
However, the update is possibly too little too late as many manufacturers are now focusing on the latest Android smartphone and tablet update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and now Samsung have a lot of work on their hands to get the newest Android OS out to its tablets.
