Remember the web 5 years ago… back when YouTube was an up and coming website, MySpace held the social networking dominance and Facebook was only for students… oh what can change in 5 years.

More importantly 5 years ago today a small software podcast company Odeo launched its latest software called twttr, back then the first Tweet was sent by co-founder Jack Dorsey stating: “Just setting up my twttr” and from then on its been a bit of a rollercoaster!

The 1st Tweet

Although twitter didn’t officially launch until the 15th of July 2006, the first ever tweet was sent by Dorsey on the 21st of March 2006, and what was originally an internal memo service is now a worldwide phenomenon.

The words Twitter, Tweet and Tweeting are now commonplace in our language, and in the 5 years since its 1st tweet the social media engine has gone from small application to one of the most influential and used websites in the world.

The Twitter platform is now the place to share, gain and even gauge information with more than 200 million members including tech companies (like ourselves), Celebrities, Sports, Film, television, Music… and basically everyone using it as a direct contact to its user base.

Not to mention the millions of personal users that have changed the way that news, events and media is showcased spread across the web.

Recently Twitter said that it had set a record of 6,939 tweets per second immediately after the Japanese earthquake, and that an incredible 177 million tweets were sent during that day and with many people getting up to date news via twitter feeds over conventional news outlets, it seems twitter is becoming more and more influential every day.

So we at the Gadget Helpline say happy birthday Twitter and we are looking forward to what your next 5 years brings you (and us).
