Google Maps for Android passes the 50 Million downloads mark

I’m sure the folk over at Google will be celebrating today as Google Maps for Android has set a new record to become the first Android application to pass the 50 million downloads mark.

Google Maps for Android made its first appearance back in 2008 just as Android 1.6 was being introduced.

Over time the app has seen big improvements with the addition of navigation mode with voice guided turn-by-turn instructions, to the more recent features like 3D views along with support for Google’s Latitude and Places services.

Let’s hope the success for this extremely popular and very useful app continues and we see a further 50 million downloads. It’s certainly worth it.
