As the app bandwagon rolls on to success story after success story, it seems even some of our best loved celebrities are jumping on board. Tom Hanks has championed and released a new app, known as Hanx Writer, which allows users to use a virtual typewriter on their iPad or iOS device.

Hanx Writer has climbed all the way to the top of Apple’s App Store after surfacing last week, and now sits at the hallowed top spot in the ‘productivity’ category as well as being the top ranked app overall.

The app features authentic typewriter sounds, such as the clunky ‘chunk’ sound of heavy key presses, hard returns and the characteristic chime when the end of a line is reached. The app also features native features from modern typing apps, such as easy corrections, and sharing via e-mail or social networks and printing.

The advertising free app has multiple additional features too, such as both on screen keyboards and the option to use a bluetooth external keyboard. Whilst it doesn’t cost anything, premium options are available at a price, such as premium virtual typewriter ‘models’ which appear onscreen, such as the Hanx 707 and the Hanx Golden Touch, which offer a different feel to the app than the default Hanx Prime Select model.

You can really see the app through the eyes of Tom Hanks, a veteran actor used to both creating and viewing content on a traditional typewriter, and of course his obvious love of the classic typing machine.

In an article printed last year in The New York Times, the actor professed his love for the typewriter. Here’s a short excerpt.

Everything you type on a typewriter sounds grand, the words forming in mini-explosions of SHOOK SHOOK SHOOK. A thank-you note resonates with the same heft as a literary masterpiece.

In addition to sound, there is the sheer physical pleasure of typing; it feels just as good as it sounds, the muscles in your hands control the volume and cadence of the aural assault so that the room echoes with the staccato beat of your synapses.
You can choose the typewriter to match your sound signature.

Just head over to the app store, you can find the Hanx Writer app there for absolutely free, with the option to pay for premium typewriter models available as an option if you feel the need to support the app.
