Polaroid Zip Portable Pocket Printer Unveiled For $130, Will Launch Spring 2015

While some might say that the popularity of the portable printer may have decreased over the years, that hasn’t stopped Polaroid from attempting to fill the void that exists in the market.

At one point, the big players such as Kodak and Canon were all involved in the portable thermal-based printers, that would allow you to dock your digital camera, or connect it via PictBridge to instantly print your favourite pictures – but over time, and with the ever increasing popularity of photography on your smartphone, it seemed as if this sort of product faded away into the darkness.

Polaroid however, has decided to try and fill the current gap in the market for the instant printer with their latest product – simply known as The Polaroid Zip. So, what does this offer that’s different to the rest? Well, first of all it has incorporated technologies that will ensure users can very easily share their snaps; this is done via NFC, simply tapping your smartphone against the printer – job done. If your device doesn’t have NFC, don’t worry as you can use the more traditional wireless technology Bluetooth to get your prints.

Moving onto the printing method, the Polaroid Zip uses a new method of printing that doesn’t actually use ink, which the company call Zink Zero Ink printing. It works by having advanced composite material embedded with cyan, yellow and magenta dye crystals and with a protective polymer overcoat.  Before printing, the dye crystals are colourless making the unique ZINK Paper look like regular white photo paper. The Polaroid Zip uses heat to activate and colorize these crystals. The result is full-colour, high quality, long-lasting and smudge-proof images without ink cartridges, ribbons or toner.

The Polaroid Zip is compatible with both Apple iOS and Android devices and is able to print 2 x 3 inch colour photos wirelessly using the Zip companion smartphone and tablet application. It weighs just 186g and measures 2.91 x 4.72 inches in size and measures less than one inch in thickness.

If this sounds like something you’ve been after, keep your eyes peeled as it’s due to go on sale within the next few months priced at $130.
