The Drone revolution cometh

With the level of technologies these days seemingly approaching singularity I believe it is time to prepare everyone for a world of drones. Military uses aside, drones will be carrying your shopping, taking security patrols around your homes, racing at high speeds around a stadium to a packed virtual audience, transporting through time to change man’s future? Okay, ignore the latter but the former three are already here.

Drone innovations have come a long way since their first outing as Austrian bomb-carrying-balloons attacking Venice way back in 1849.
Focusing in particular on shopping; 6-wheeler drones are due to be rolling themselves around London delivering goods in the very near future, 2016 to be exact.
The company behind this cute little feller of a drone is called Starship Technologies and it was launched by Skypes co-founders, their mission; to make local delivery free!

“Our vision revolves around three zeroes – zero cost, zero waiting time and zero environmental impact,” say the founders. “We want to do to local deliveries what Skype did to telecommunications.”

The little driverless electric vehicles pioneering their mission statement have 6 wheels, stand just over 20 inches tall and can be packed with a sizable amount of goods for short shipments.

All the customer will need to do is select the items they wish to purchase online, pick from multiple delivery windows and then track the delivery progress via the app installed on their device. Once it arrives all they need do is tap on the device to open the lid. The drones will be capable of up to 4mph, can directly communicate with the police via distress signal in emergency and can be remotely driven by human pilots.
“Our robots are purposely designed using the technologies made affordable by mobile phones and tablets – it’s fit for purpose, and allows for the cost savings to be passed on to the customer.”
